She gave him a new rose

A red rose of desire

She wanted him to see

The passion, the fire

She felt when they were together

Fever dammed up in her soul

Her heart beat fast

She placed the rose down

And rang the bell at last

Riding the wind out of sight

She ate nails and sat on pins

Waiting for love to answer

And when he came

Bewilderment was like a dancer

Whose next act was hard to follow

Desire lay crushed,

Some of its petals missing

Her love once again mistaken

For unearthly lust, dismissing

The rose for a passerby's kiss
